I offer DBT couples therapy in Connecticut and Vermont. In the beginning, we will work to understand each person’s goals for the relationship. This can include how each person shows up, what you each want to change, and how I can be supportive. Together, we will identify tools to use in and outside of therapy to improve your relationship.
DBT couples therapy offers a skills-based and direct approach that can help high conflict couples learn how to have hard conversations. This skills based approach is aimed at helping each partner regulate their own emotions and communicate clearly what is happening for them. In addition, it teaches both partner how to validate the other in order to build trust.
Examples of things we may use in DBT couples therapy sessions include:
A Diary Card – This helps us keep track of behaviors that we are trying to change. Each time a behavior shows up, we can look at many facets of that behavior and start to learn the underpinnings of why this behavior is happening.

Double Behavior Chain Analysis – This helps us dive into a specific situation to understand each partner’s internal and external experience during the situation. It helps reduce assumptions and encourages curiosity.

A great resource ahead of or during couples DBT therapy is Dr. Alan Fruzzetti’s book “The High Conflict Couple” linked below.
